Acrostic Poem

Daniel

by me:)

Daniel is his name.

As precious as an angel to me;

Noisy at times he may be;

In trouble he comes to Mommy.

Even heartaches, sometimes he brings me;

Lovely he’ll always be to me.

USJ-R’s Win on Waste

Win on Waste. WOW! USJ-R is the first school in Cebu to systematize the adoption of a waste management program.

Win on Waste is a self-sustaining project of the university that aims to make Josenians engage in resource conservation, ecological care and protection, and waste management. Its mission is to integrate the value of environmental stewardship in the curriculum, conserve through responsible use of resources; practice waste segregation, reduction, recovery, reusing, and recycling; promote environmental sustainability through greening projects; provide green research opportunities; and establish linkage with other agencies and institutions.

 The project have been launched March of last year. Fr. Amado Emmanuel Bolilia, Waste Management Co-Chair has been very active in educating and encouraging students and staff on garbage reduction, recycling and segregation. The school practices energy consumption reduction by limiting the use of air conditioners and lights. WOW program has also made possible the establishment of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), Recycling Site (Basak Campus),                       Vermicomposting Site (Talavera House of Prayer-Recoletos), and the Butterfly Sanctuary (Basak Campus).

USJ-R’s Win on Waste is one of the best projects of the school. In line with the project is putting trash bins in key areas such as the canteen and classrooms. There are a few areas though that needs to be put with trash bins such as the St. Ezekiel building lobbies. There are bins along the stairs though it would have been better if they were put right in the lobby. It will be easier for students staying in the lobby to throw their garbage. What is commonly noticed in the lobby, specifically on the 4th floor where the College of Education is located is that candy and biscuit wrappers, disposable cups and bottles, papers and other garbage clutter on the tables. What could be the reason for this? Inaccessible garbage bins or personal lack of discipline? As aspiring teachers, we should live by example and the most basic thing for us to learn is to be responsible and dispose of our garbage properly. WOW can be more successful than it already is with our full cooperation. We all have our relationship with nature, let us all do our part. Let us all take responsibility of being stewards of the environment.

A Student’s Stressful Life

The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education.”-Albert Einstein

A student’s life I would say is one of the most stressful. From assignments, quizzes, projects, exams to parent’s beyond high expectations.  Stress comes from the demands of your course and a great percentage from your teacher.

How do you know you’re stressed? Symptoms are:

1. Unkempt hair

2. Disorganization

3. Forgetfulness

4. Loss of concentration

5. Anxiety

6. Depression

How to cope with stress?

Develop techniques for the following that are suitable to you.

1. Time management techniques: Student life is all about learning how to achieve a balance between studies and other activities. If you want to do well at school, you have to devote time to your studies. It helps to plan in advance and schedule time for study.

2. Organization techniques: There will be a number of things you will need to file, such as notes, assignments, submission dates and examination times. Keep a calendar or a notebook or whatever method that will work for you. Know what you have to do and when, so you don’t get behind at schoolwork.

3. Study Techniques: The conventional method of study may not work as well for you. If you remember and understand things better by experiments rather than reading about them in books, you should do these as much as possible. Remember, there is no  ‘correct’ way of studying.

Tips:

1. Create a study environment: Ideally, you should choose a place that is quiet and free from distractions. Try not to study on your bed because you will tend to fall asleep even if you don’t intend to. A desk with good lighting works well for most people. If you have trouble getting in the mood, try dividing the task into small chunks.

2. Be an Optimist: Do not let  little failures get you down. There will always be a time when you aren’t able to do  well on a particular test, or find yourself unable to be as good at one thing as you are at another. Recognize these as a necessary part of life and try not to make a big deal out of them. If you are cheerful, you will naturally feel better and less stressed.

3. Sleep Well: This is important, as many students today think they can get away with sleeping less. While this may be alright for one night, as a regular schedule it disturbs your health and sleep cycle. You will find it harder to concentrate and end up feeling more frustrated and stressed out about schoolwork.

Restaurant Critique

Joed’s Lutong Hapon

257-A Jose Avila St.cor Ma. Cristina Ext., Kamputhaw

(near Sacred Heart School-Hijas de Jesus)

The restaurant claims to offer the “:pinakalami nga Japanese nga pagkaon”. It is located besideSacredHeartSchool now known asSacredHeartCenter in Capitol. The location is convenient for people working or transacting business in Capitol area likeSacredHeartCenter, Cebu Doctor’s Hospital,CapitolBuilding andCebuTrialCourtBuilding. The restaurant is quite difficult to find if you are not familiar of the Capitol Area.

  Upon entering you will be greeted and ushered to your table by a restaurant staff. The menu will be handed shortly. The prices range from 35 pesos to 210 pesos which is quite affordable. Servings are with rice toppings aside from sushi, ramen and tempura. Food is served after only a few minutes, which is good for those who are really hungry. Their beef tendons at 120 pesos and pork gyudon at 95 pesos are a must try. It would have been better if they served the food hot. The restaurant is child friendly for they have special servings for children at 35 pesos. It is an advantage for parents not having to pay the full serving when their children can’t consume. The restaurant has a mineral water dispenser on the corner which is for free which I greatly appreciate. Those who want to try another variety aside from the typical Filipino food; this is one place to go.

The staffs are accommodating. They just need to smile more. They would have also looked nicer if they wore Japanese inspired uniform since it is a Japanese restaurant. The refrigerator containing vegetables is found in the dining area which I think should be in the kitchen. The kitchen line didn’t look so clean and organized.

Andam Ko

Carla L. Walker

Sa matag gabii nga akong itingpanghulay,

Nagabati ko ug tumang kamingaw.

Sa imong hulagway nagalantaw kanunay,

Nagangilit kining mga luha sa hilabihang katugnaw.

Usahay ako makahuna-huna,

Kung ikaw sama nako wala mahiluna.

Basin ikaw nanghinubra sa pahulay,

Ug gikalimtan kining akong hulagway.

Hinaut kining atong pagbati dili unta malaya,

Kay kining akong gibati dili lalim baya.

Ampingi intawon kining  pagsalig ko,

Kay gugma nga walay kahangturan andam ako.
